- Comes in a sealed plastic pouch that must not be opened before the birth
- Needs to be packed in advance and taken to the birth, since it is used at the moment of clamping
- Tying it requires a non-slip knot (bowline, fisherman's or similar) placed two to three finger-widths from the baby's belly, and sterile scissors or blade to cut
- Some maternity units may not accept it in place of the plastic clamp, in which case it is fitted afterwards at a diaper (nappy) change
- Must be kept out of the diaper and left open to the air rather than tucked in
- Washed by hand or by machine at 30-40 °C
- Re-sterilising means boiling for at least three minutes and storing frozen in a clean bag until the birth
