Hea teada

- Needs to be in your hands at the birth, whether in hospital or at home
- Hand wash, or machine wash at 30-40 °C
- Sterilising means boiling for three minutes and then storing in a sealed bag in the freezer until the birth
- Must be kept out of the diaper (nappy) and exposed to air so the cord can dry
- A maternity unit may decline to use it in place of a plastic clamp
- Falls off naturally with the dried cord after three to seven days
- Cutting the cord still requires sterile scissors or a sterile blade
